Life has been coming at us pretty fast and furious lately. All of it has been good, it's just been back-to-back trips, all day events, and swim meets out the wazoo. I can't tell you how many times we have packed and unpacked the "swim" bag over the past 4-5 weeks.
Abby finished up her first swim team season on top of the world. She completely blew us away with how well she did and how much she progressed. At divisionals, she took 6th in freestyle and 6th in backstroke out of about 100 or more kids in her age category. At regular meets, she was walking away with 1st or 2nd in backstroke at every single meet. She also won the "Most Improved" award from her team. I don't think that kid has ever smiled so hard in her life. She improved her times enough to even qualify for the invitational meet, which meant another chaotic all-day event with hundreds of kids and hours in the unbearable heat this past weekend.
I managed to slip away early in June to attend a friend's wedding in upstate New York. I somehow survived the 9 hour trip with Zelda, even though her gut was "composting" most of the way there and we were stuffed inside one of those tiny little airplanes with a total of 36 seats. When a vulture/hawk came squawking in our direction and bombarded our rental car, it nearly scared the shit out of me. Apparently, it was only setting the tone and ambiance for that trip. I won't go into details, but let's just say that Zelda and I learned a lot about the R word.
Just last week, we visited a few huge amusement parks with Zelda and her girls out of town. It was great fun the first few days, but by day 4, the sun and 108 degree weather had pounded us into lumpy red piles of dough. Even our eyeballs were sun-torched. Ahh, but the rollercoasters!!! When I ride a good coaster, I laugh hysterically the entire time. Just pure, unadulterated, hyena-like laughter. It's good for the soul.
This past Sunday, Abby left for resident Girl Scout Camp. For four days. My little girl, gone from home, in someone's care I don't even know, for four days. We went and picked her up last night and she was beaming with excitement. She had a blast and couldn't wait to sign-up again for next summer.
So now, we are packing up to head to my sister's in Bryan for the holiday 3-day weekend. We are hoping for some fun, beer, and relaxation.
